Women’s Ballon d’Or: Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati wins award for first time

Spain’s midfield sensation, Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona, has secured her maiden Women’s Ballon d’Or.

At 25 years old, Bonmati enjoyed an immensely successful year, contributing significantly to her club’s triumph in the Spanish top-flight and the Champions League, along with her pivotal role in Spain’s World Cup victory during the summer.

Her exceptional performances also earned her the title of UEFA’s Player of the Year in August.

Mary Earps, the talented England goalkeeper, achieved a respectable fifth-place finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings, while her compatriot Rachel Daly secured the tenth position. Among the nominees were fellow Lionesses, Millie Bright and Georgia Stanway.

In her acceptance speech, Bonmati humbly stated, “I’m incredibly proud to receive the Ballon d’Or. Football is a team sport, so I’d like to dedicate this award to my teammates and the coaching staff.”

She concluded her remarks in English, saying, “Lastly, congratulations to the other nominees. They are exceptional footballers. As role models, we bear a responsibility both on and off the field. We should aspire to be more than just athletes, leading by example and working together for a better, more peaceful, and equitable world.”

Spain’s World Cup victory was somewhat marred by controversy, as it was overshadowed by the incident involving Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales kissing Jenni Hermoso after the final, an act she later stated was not consensual.

Bonmati’s outstanding performance during the tournament in Australia and New Zealand included three crucial goals, ultimately leading Spain to a victory over England in the final match.

With four league titles with Barcelona and two Champions League trophies to her name, Aitana Bonmati continues to make her mark in women’s football.

This marks the fifth edition of the Ballon d’Or Féminin, with Bonmati’s Spain and Barcelona teammate, Alexia Putellas, having secured the title in the previous two editions.
