Doctors in Honduras were astonished when they discovered a cockroach inside a woman’s vagina.
The unnamed patient visited a clinic in Tegucigalpa, Central America, complaining of feeling extremely restless, agitated, and sweaty. She had experienced discomfort the previous night, sensing something unusual trapped in her vagina.
Upon examination, the medical team found the deceased insect inside her. Dr. Marco Cálix, a gynecologist at Hospital y Clinicas Viera, who attended to the patient, expressed disbelief, stating he had never encountered such a case before. Using a speculum, a medical instrument for internal examinations, they removed the cockroach from her vagina.
The circumstances surrounding the insect’s entry into the woman’s body remained unclear. While it’s not unusual for foreign objects to be found during vaginal exams, discovering a cockroach was unprecedented.
Although insects can sometimes find their way into the body, such occurrences are more common in areas like the ears. In a study, a South African hospital extracted various critters, including cockroaches, from patients’ ears over a two-year period.
Ingested or inserted foreign objects can pose risks of infection or injury, particularly if they scratch sensitive tissues. Signs of potential problems include pain, swelling, abnormal discharge, bleeding, or a rash. Dr. Marco advised women to seek medical attention if they experience any concerns.
This incident adds to the list of bizarre items discovered in vaginas, including scented soap, deodorant caps, penis rings, headphones, candles, and even a toy wand, as documented in a compilation from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s database.
