Rob Reiner Drops Sneak Peek into Upcoming ‘Spinal Tap’ Follow-Up

The filmmaker Rob Reiner revealed that production for the highly-anticipated sequel to his 1984 mockumentary, “This Is Spinal Tap,” is set to kick off in late February. The upcoming installment, titled “Spinal Tap II,” boasts a star-studded cast, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks, alongside other renowned artists.

The original “Spinal Tap” lampooned the misadventures of a fictional British heavy-metal band during a chaotic tour, taking a satirical approach to both the band’s exploits and the documentary-making process. Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s “The Last Waltz,” the film, largely improvised, starred Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as members of the fictitious band.

Last year’s announcement of the sequel indicated the return of the original cast. Reiner, in a recent episode of comedian Richard Herring’s podcast, shared additional insights into the sequel, initially slated for a 2024 release but now facing delays due to Hollywood strikes. No updated release date has been confirmed.

While Reiner hinted at surprise appearances in the sequel, he did not provide specific details. The podcast episode delved into Reiner’s new podcast, “Who Killed JFK?” but also revisited the original “Spinal Tap,” Herring’s favorite film. When asked about any regrets or anticipation of the film’s influence, Reiner expressed satisfaction with the original and recalled initial audience confusion, highlighting the film’s unexpected journey to becoming a cult classic.
