Rebeca Andrade Proves She Can Beat Simone Biles, World Takes Notice

Simone Biles, an eleven-time Olympic medalist, has long been considered nearly unbeatable, yet Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade demonstrated that overcoming her is indeed possible.

During the Paris Games on Monday, Andrade edged out her American counterpart to win the gold medal in the floor exercise, leaving Biles with the silver. This victory was especially meaningful for Andrade, who has often been overshadowed by Biles throughout her career.

Expressing her joy and pride, Andrade reflected on her journey and preparation. “Gymnastics demands a lot from our body and mind, and I was confident I could handle the pressure,” she stated after her triumph.

Their rivalry was acknowledged by Biles herself, who had previously recognized Andrade as her toughest competitor, expressing a mix of admiration and concern over how close Andrade was getting to surpassing her.

Andrade’s road to Olympic glory was fraught with challenges, including three knee surgeries due to ACL injuries, which could have ended her career. Despite these setbacks, she continued to excel, claiming historic wins, such as becoming the first South American gymnast on the all-around podium at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she won a silver medal and later a gold in the vault.

Raised in São Paulo as one of eight siblings, Andrade began gymnastics at the age of five, her training supported by her mother who worked as a house cleaner. Her determination and skill eventually led her to become a world champion, capable of defeating even the most decorated gymnasts.

At the Paris Games, following setbacks in the balance beam event, both Biles and Andrade were determined to impress in their floor routines. While Biles faced penalties, Andrade delivered a flawless performance that set a high benchmark, ultimately securing her victory.

After her win, Andrade could not hide her joy upon receiving her medals, especially valuing her team bronze as a collective dream realized. Reflecting on her individual achievements, she remarked on her persistent fight to claim a gold medal.

The respect Andrade commanded was evident when Biles and bronze medalist Jordan Chiles honored her during the medal ceremony, a gesture that solidified her status and created an iconic Olympic moment.
