Nasal Sprays Proven Effective in Reducing Duration of Illnesses

A recent study involving nearly 14,000 adults has found that commonly available nasal sprays, such as Vicks First Defence and Sterinase, effectively reduce the duration of colds, flu, and other respiratory infections by about 20%. The study, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine on July 11, highlighted the need for effective, affordable, non-prescription methods to lessen the symptom burden and reduce antibiotic usage.

Conducted by researchers from the University of Southampton, the study also examined the impact of physical activity and stress management on respiratory infections. Findings showed these practices, along with the use of nasal sprays, not only shortened the duration of illnesses but also decreased the reliance on antibiotics, which is crucial in combating antibiotic resistance.

Professor Paul Little, a primary care researcher at the University of Southampton and the study’s lead, emphasized the importance of these findings, particularly during the winter months when infection rates spike. He advised using nasal sprays at the first sign of respiratory symptoms and after being exposed to infected individuals to prevent full-blown infections.

Lucy Yardley, a professor of health psychology at both the University of Bristol and the University of Southampton, noted that the frequency of nasal spray use was critical. The study recommended using the spray six times a day at the onset of symptoms for maximum benefit, although many participants did not adhere to this regimen and still experienced significant relief.

Participants were recruited from 332 primary care practices across the UK and were randomly assigned to use one of the nasal sprays or to engage in activities promoted by an online resource for physical activity and stress management. Another group received usual care. Those engaging in physical activity and stress management reported a modest 5% improvement in recovery time, showcasing that even simple, cost-effective online advice can significantly impact public health.
