Murray Plans Retirement Following Paris Olympics

Andy Murray has announced his retirement from professional tennis following the 2024 Paris Olympics.

At 37, Murray plans to compete in both singles and doubles at his fifth Olympics. “Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament,” Murray posted on X. He added, “Competing for Team GB has been the most memorable time of my career and I’m honored to do it one last time!”

Murray’s Olympic journey began in Beijing in 2008 where he faced an early exit. However, he rebounded strongly at the London 2012 Olympics, defeating Roger Federer to secure gold just weeks after a Wimbledon final loss to the same opponent. He made history at Rio 2016 by becoming the first male player to win two Olympic singles gold medals.

David Haggerty, president of the International Tennis Federation, praised Murray, noting, “Sir Andy has exemplified the spirit of tennis, advocating for equality and the inclusivity of the sport.”

After undergoing a crucial hip surgery in January 2019, Murray, a three-time Grand Slam and two-time Wimbledon winner, made his final Wimbledon appearance earlier this month. Despite aspirations to compete in mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu, injuries influenced his decision to withdraw.

Reflecting on his Wimbledon exit, Murray expressed his emotional struggle with the decision to retire: “I love tennis and wish I could play forever, but physically, it’s become too demanding.”

Earlier this year, Murray indicated he wouldn’t play much after the summer, looking forward to his final Olympic appearance in Paris.

The tennis events in Paris will kick off on July 27 at Roland Garros, concluding with the medal rounds on August 4. Dan Evans will join Murray in the doubles competition.

Murray is determined to leave his mark at these Olympics, a fitting finale to a career defined by resilience and extraordinary achievements. Despite his recent challenges with form and fitness, his determination remains unwavering.

As he prepares for his final Olympic effort, Murray has already planned a family holiday to begin his post-tennis life, hoping to conclude his storied career with another memorable performance in Paris.
