In Address to NAACP, Biden Condemns Violence While Continuing Criticism of Trump

President Joe Biden resumed his campaign efforts with a first appearance on the trail since a near-fatal attack on his opponent, former President Donald Trump. Biden spoke in Las Vegas, Nevada, addressing the incident where a shooter targeted Trump during a rally, resulting in casualties including a fatality and injuries to others, including Trump.

Biden emphasized the need for political calm, stating, “Our politics have gotten too heated…we all have a responsibility to lower the temperature and condemn violence in any form. We’re not enemies in America. We’re friends, neighbors, fellow Americans.”

Despite condemning the violence, Biden continued to critique Trump for his policies on the economy, reproductive rights, and gun control, underlining the importance of truth in political discourse.

The speech, part of the NAACP national convention, underscored Biden’s commitment to addressing political violence and its impacts on community safety and national unity. He also highlighted disparities in responses to violence against different communities, particularly pointing out the contrast in reactions to violence against Black individuals and political figures like Trump.

Biden used the platform to reiterate his administration’s achievements, particularly in supporting historically Black colleges and universities and reducing Black unemployment, cautioning that Trump’s policies could reverse these gains.

In his concluding remarks, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the campaign, amidst discussions about his suitability following a challenging debate performance, signaling his readiness to continue leading with the support of his party and the crucial Black electorate.
