Gareth Southgate Exits as England Manager After Euro 2024 Final Loss

Gareth Southgate has decided to step down as the manager of the England men’s national team, announcing his departure following England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin. This marks his last game after a tenure that spanned eight years and included overseeing 102 matches. Southgate’s era included two consecutive Euro finals, a feat not previously achieved by England, though both ended in defeat.

Under his leadership, England advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarterfinals in Qatar in 2022, reflecting a period of significant improvement in international tournament performances. Southgate highlighted his tenure as the honor of his life and expressed pride in having served both as a player and a manager for England. He acknowledged the need for change and a new chapter, believing it was the right moment to step aside.

The team’s performance at Euro 2024 drew criticism for its style of play, yet Southgate regained public support as England demonstrated resilience and late-game strengths throughout the tournament. Despite falling short in the final, Southgate praised the young squad’s potential and expressed hope for their future successes.

The English Football Association’s St. George’s Park, home to all 23 national football teams, was a focal point in his farewell message, emphasizing the supportive environment for player and sport development. He also recognized the fans’ unwavering support and declared his ongoing support as an England fan.

Prince William, president of the FA, and Mark Bullingham, FA’s CEO, both lauded Southgate for his contributions, noting his class, humility, and the positive foundation he set for future successes. Southgate’s legacy includes enhancing England’s standing on the international stage and providing stability and vision for the national team.

The FA has commenced the search for a new manager, aiming to build on the strong foundations laid by Southgate and his team.
