Former Olympic Cyclist Dies in Las Vegas Apartment Days After Choking Incident

Daniela Larreal Chirinos, a distinguished five-time Olympic cyclist, was found deceased in her Las Vegas apartment following an incident where she reportedly choked on food. The 51-year-old Venezuelan athlete, known for her remarkable contributions to track cycling, was discovered days after she was last seen. She had failed to report to her job at a Las Vegas hotel since August 12, and was believed to have died on August 11, according to FOX Sports.

The cause of death was identified as asphyxiation due to solid food remnants in her trachea. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has yet to release further details, and the Clark County Coroner’s Office stated that an official cause of death is still pending.

Chirinos’ illustrious career in track cycling included participation in five Olympic Games, starting with her debut in Barcelona in 1992, and culminating in her last appearance at the 2012 Summer Games in London, where her best result was a seventh-place finish in the Team Sprint final. Her achievements also include two gold medals at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships, making her one of Venezuela’s most celebrated cyclists.

Her passing was acknowledged by the Venezuelan Olympic Committee, which praised her legacy and impact on the sport. A post on social media highlighted her “outstanding career” and the pride she brought to her country through her Olympic representations and multiple triumphs.
