When faced with challenges, Dakota Johnson can always rely on her boyfriend, Chris Martin, to prioritize her well-being.
The “Fifty Shades of Grey” actress, known for openly discussing her history of depression, shared insights into how the Coldplay singer recently provided support during an appearance at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) 17th annual luncheon earlier this month.
“A few weeks ago, I was having a low day,” revealed Johnson at the event, as reported by Hello! magazine and InStyle. “And my partner said to me, ‘Are you really struggling?’ and I said, ‘No?'”
Despite Johnson’s attempt to downplay her mental state, Martin sensed something was amiss.
“He said, ‘Baby, you are wearing a cat’s T-shirt.’ As in ‘Cats’ the music,” recounted Johnson. “So, it turns out, I really was struggling. But that moment lifted me up and pulled me out of it.”
Johnson was honored with the HOPE Award for Depression Advocacy in recognition of her openness about living with depression and anxiety, according to the foundation’s official website.
“Removing the stigma of anxiety and depressive disorders and the means to help them is essential,” emphasized Johnson in her acceptance speech, as reported by HDRF. “We are in too much trouble as a human race to feel further isolated by the brain chemistry and complexities of the mind that we are born with, or the life experiences that we may not have chosen given the state of the world.
“If we help each other understand that caring for our mental health is essential, perhaps that will turn practicing self-love and self-compassion into a vital part of living.”
Johnson and Martin first sparked romance rumors in October 2017 when they were seen dining at a sushi restaurant, according to People magazine. In October 2021, Martin publicly dedicated the Coldplay song “My Universe” to Johnson during a concert in London.
