Chelsea Initiates Disciplinary Action Against Fernandez for Alleged Racist Chant

Chelsea Football Club has initiated internal disciplinary action against midfielder Enzo Fernandez following his posting of a video on social media that contained what the French Football Federation (FFF) has labeled a “racist and discriminatory” chant. This video, which emerged as part of Argentina’s Copa America victory celebrations, led to criticism from various quarters, including Fernandez’s own teammate, Wesley Fofana of France, who labeled the content as “uninhibited racism.”

Responding to the backlash, Fernandez expressed deep regret over the incident, apologizing for the offensive content of the song featured in the video. He emphasized that the sentiments expressed do not represent his personal beliefs or character and acknowledged the inappropriate nature of the language used.

Chelsea has recognized Fernandez’s public apology, viewing it as an opportunity to further educate on issues of discrimination. Meanwhile, the FFF announced plans to approach FIFA and the Argentine Football Association (AFA), seeking action regarding the incident which they described as contrary to the values of sport and human rights.

The FFF’s statement, voiced by President Philippe Diallo, strongly condemned the discriminatory remarks made in the video, highlighting the severity of the issue and the need for legal action against such behavior.

This incident comes amidst a backdrop of historical football rivalry between France and Argentina, notably their encounters in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Chelsea, a club noted for its diversity, stated that it finds all forms of discriminatory behavior completely unacceptable, reiterating its commitment to being a diverse and inclusive organization. The club’s first-team squad includes several players of black or mixed heritage, underscoring its inclusive ethos.
