Tito Jackson of the Jackson 5 Passes Away at 70, According to His Sons

Tito Jackson, a key member of the iconic pop ensemble the Jackson 5, has passed away at the age of 70.

Tito, one of the nine Jackson siblings which included legends Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, was part of a musical dynasty that continues to resonate with fans around the world.

In a heartfelt Instagram post late Sunday, his sons TJ, Taj, and Taryll shared the news: “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson. We are shocked, saddened, and heartbroken. He was an incredible man who deeply cared about the well-being of everyone.”

The Jackson 5, which featured brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, gained international fame under the management of their father, Joe Jackson. They produced several chart-topping hits in the 1970s, including “ABC,” “I Want You Back,” and “I’ll Be There,” and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Born Toriano Adaryll “Tito” Jackson on October 15, 1953, he was primarily a background singer and guitarist in the group. While his brothers eventually pursued solo careers—with Michael emerging as a global superstar—Tito focused on family, helping to raise his three sons who themselves became musicians with the group 3T.

Reflecting on his brother Michael’s death in 2009, Tito shared with The Associated Press in December 2009 how the loss had brought the Jackson family closer. He expressed a never-ending sense of disbelief and the permanent impact of Michael’s absence, especially during performances.

Before his death, Tito visited a memorial for Michael in Munich with his brothers, acknowledging the enduring legacy and the fan support that keeps their spirit alive. He posted about the experience on his Facebook page on September 11, expressing gratitude for the tribute to Michael.

Tito’s own musical career saw a late flourish with the release of his debut solo album “Tito Time” in 2016. His last musical endeavor was a song in 2017 called “One Way Street,” and he had been working on a second album.

Survived by his brothers Jermaine, Randy, Marlon, Jackie, and sisters Janet, Rebbie, and LaToya, along with their mother, Katherine, Tito leaves behind a rich musical and familial legacy. His death was first reported by Entertainment Tonight.
