Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady and wife of former President Jimmy Carter, is currently under hospice care at the family’s Georgia residence.
At 96 years old, Rosalynn was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year, making it a challenging year for the Carters. Back in January, the 99-year-old former President also began receiving hospice care. In a statement released on Friday, the Carter Center mentioned that Rosalynn and Jimmy are spending quality time together with their family. The Carter family continues to request privacy and expresses deep gratitude for the overwhelming love and support they have received.
The Carters call Plains, Georgia, their home, as it is where they were both born and raised. Rosalynn and Jimmy have been happily married for 77 years, tying the knot in 1946. Rosalynn served as First Lady from 1977 to 1981 during Jimmy’s four-year tenure in the White House.
Back in September, their grandson Josh Carter told PEOPLE that Rosalynn and Jimmy were “in the final chapter” of their remarkable lives.
